Ubuntu 21.10 Impish Indri

Canonical heeft Ubuntu 21.10 Impish Indri uitgebracht. Ubuntu is een van de populairdere Linux-distributies die erg makkelijk te gebruiken is. De Linux-variant is bij een aantal laptops te kiezen als alternatief besturingssysteem voor Windows. De belangrijkste wijziging in deze versie van Ubuntu is dat nu Gnome 40 wordt gebruikt als de standaardbureaubladomgeving. In versie 40 van Gnome is de workspace-switcher nu horizontaal uitgelijnd en is de bestandsmanager verbeterd. Zo is het nu mogelijk om een met wachtwoord beschermd zip-bestand uit te pakken.

Andere updates in deze release vinden we in het feit dat Mozilla Firefox nu een Snap-app is en dat Wayland kan worden gebruikt in combinatie met de officiële, closed-source Nvidia-drivers. Ook is weer software bijgewerkt in deze versie van Ubuntu, zoals LibreOffice 7.2, PulseAudio 15, Linux-kernel 5.13, Firefox 93 en Thunderbird 91.1.2. Versie 5.13 van de Linux-kernel ondersteunt Microsoft Surface-laptops en -tablets, toekomstige Intel- en AMD-chips zoals Intel Alderlake S en AMD Aldebaran en een begin aan ondersteuning voor Apple M1.

Je vindt de volledige changelog van en instructies om te upgraden naar deze versie van Ubuntu hieronder. Tegelijkertijd met Ubuntu zijn ook andere varianten van de distro uitgekomen. Ubuntu 21.10 krijgt negen maanden updates. Na die negen maanden moet je dus upgraden naar de volgende Ubuntu-release. Eens in de twee jaar komt Canonical met een langetermijnversie van Ubuntu, aangeduid met LTS in het versienummer, met vijf jaar gratis ondersteuning.

Downloaden

Je kunt direct naar deze versie van Ubuntu upgraden als je nu versie 21.04 draait. Gebruik je versie 20.04 LTS, de laatste versie met langetermijnondersteuning, dan kun je beter wachten op de volgende LTS-versie, die alweer over zes maanden verschijnt. Daar kun je dan in één keer naartoe upgraden.

Voor Ubuntu 21.04 open je de applicatie Software & Updates. Kies dan voor het derde tabblad, Updates. Selecteer bij de optie Notify me of a new Ubuntu version voor For any new version. Druk dan op Alt + F2 en typ update-manager -c. De updatemanager opent zich dan met de melding dat Ubuntu 21.10 beschikbaar is. Volg de installatiestappen om te upgraden.

Je kunt ook het ISO-installatiebestand direct downloaden en daar een opstartbare usb-stick mee maken.

Support lifespan

Ubuntu 21.10 will be supported for 9 months until July 2022. If you need Long Term Support, it is recommended you use Ubuntu 20.04 LTS 87 instead.

Upgrading from Ubuntu 21.04

To upgrade on a desktop system:

  • Open the “Software & Updates” Setting in System Settings.
  • Select the 3rd Tab called “Updates”.
  • Set the “Notify me of a new Ubuntu version” dropdown menu to “For any new version”.
  • Press Alt+ F2 and type in update-manager -c into the command box.
    • Update Manager should open up and tell you: "New distribution release ‘21.10’ is available."
  • If not you can also use /usr/lib/ubuntu-release-upgrader/check-new-release-gtk
  • Click Upgrade and follow the on-screen instructions.

To upgrade on a server system:

  • Install the update-manager-core package if it is not already installed.
  • Make sure the Prompt line in /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades is set to normal.
  • Launch the upgrade tool with the command sudo do-release-upgrade.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.

Note that the server upgrade will use GNU screen and automatically re-attach in case of dropped connection problems.

There are no offline upgrade options for Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Server. Please ensure you have network connectivity to one of the official mirrors or to a locally accessible mirror and follow the instructions above.

Upgrades on 32-bit x86 (i386)

Users of the i386 architecture will not be presented with an upgrade. Support for i386 as a host architecture is dropped in 19.10.

Linux 5.13 109 introduces support for new hardware and some less new:

Toolchain Upgrades

GCC was updated to the 11.2.0 release, binutils to 2.37, and glibc to 2.34. LLVM now defaults to version 13. golang defaults to version 1.17.x. rustc defaults to version 1.51.

OpenJDK 18 is now available (but not used for package builds).

Security Improvements

nftables is now the default backend for the firewall.

Base System

  • systemd is being switched to the “unified” cgroup hierarchy (cgroup v2) by default. If for some reason you need to keep the legacy cgroup v1 hierarchy, you can select it via a kernel parameter at boot time: systemd.unified_cgroup_hierarchy=0 (bug 1850667 9)

Ubuntu Desktop

  • Wayland sessions are now available while using the Nvidia proprietary driver.
  • PulseAudio 15 104 introduces support for Bluetooth LDAC and AptX codecs, as well as HFP Bluetooth profiles providing better audio quality.
    • The recovery key feature at installation time has been improved. The recovery key is now optional, stronger and editable.
GNOME

Ubuntu 21.10 includes GNOME version 40 79, including a new and improved Activities Overview design. Workspaces are now arranged horizontally, and the overview and app grid are accessed vertically. Each direction has accompanying keyboard shortcuts, touchpad gestures and mouse actions.

Updated Applications
  • Firefox version 93 is now seeded as a snap by default 103, instead of a deb package. The snap is jointly maintained by Mozilla (its publisher) and Canonical. The deb package remains available in the archive and will continue receiving updates for the lifetime of Ubuntu 21.10.
