Microsoft heeft aangekondigd dat de volgende versie voor Windows 10 beschikbaar is. Het gaat hier om versie 21H1, ook wel bekend als de mei 2021-update. In deze update bevinden zich geen grote wijzigingen aan het besturingssysteem, in tegenstelling tot eerdere updates van Windows 10. De enige wijzigingen die wel aanwezig zijn in deze versie is ondersteuning voor meerdere camera's voor Windows Hello, waarbij je de standaardcamera kunt kiezen. Ook is er een verbetering doorgevoerd in Windows Defender Application Guard waardoor deze beveiligingsmaatregel nu beter presteert. Hetzelfde geldt voor Windows Management Instrumentation-groepsbeleidservices.
Er zijn dus geen interessante nieuwe functies in deze versie van Windows 10. Dat komt omdat de wel interessante functies die eigenlijk gepland stonden voor deze versie zijn doorgeschoven naar later dit jaar, of al zijn uitgebracht in de vorm van losse updates voor ook oudere versies van Windows 10. Een voorbeeld van zo'n update is de widget in de taakbalk voor weer en nieuws.
Functies die op de planning staan voor de Windows 10-update van het najaar van 2021 zijn onder andere DNS via HTTPS (DoH), notificaties voor apps die zich met Windows mee willen starten, een nieuwe emoji-kiezer, nieuwe pictogrammen voor heel Windows 10 en gpu-ondersteuning voor WSL. Het is natuurlijk altijd de vraag of die functies ook daadwerkelijk volgens planning uitkomen.

Downloaden
Windows 10 21H1 is te downloaden via Windows Update. Daarvoor open je de app Instellingen door het Startmenu te openen en linksonder op het tandwiel te klikken. Ga dan naar Bijwerken en beveiliging, kies links voor Windows Update en klik op Controleren op updates. Je ziet dan, als het goed is, de nieuwe versie van Windows 10 verschijnen. Het kan zijn dat Microsoft 'm niet aan je aanbiedt, als blijkt dat je hardware er niet compatibel mee is.

Our approach to update availability and rollout
In the current environment, we know that you continue to rely on your PCs more than ever. As a result, we are initially taking a measured seeker-based approach to the rollout of the May 2021 Update. We are throttling availability up over the coming weeks to ensure a reliable download experience for all, so the update may not be offered to you right away. Additionally, some devices might have a compatibility issue for which a safeguard hold is in place. In these cases, we will not offer the update until we are confident that you will have a good update experience.
How to get the Windows 10 May 2021 Update
The May 2021 Update is available initially to select devices running Windows 10, version 2004 or later who are interested in experiencing the latest feature updates and are ready to install this release on their device. If you would like to install the new release, open your Windows Update settings (Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update) and select Check for updates. If the update appears, you can simply select Download and install to get started. Once the download is complete and the update is ready to install, we’ll notify you so that you can pick the right time to finish the installation and reboot your device, ensuring that the update does not disrupt your activities. Devices running either Windows 10, version 2004 or version 20H2 will have a fast overall update experience because the update will install like a monthly update.
