Met VMware Workstation Pro kun je besturingssystemen virtualiseren. Zo kun je bijvoorbeeld oude Windows-versies installeren en gebruiken, zoals Windows 98, 2000 of Windows XP, maar ook bijvoorbeeld Linux of Unix, direct vanuit je eigen desktop.
Met VMware Workstation kun je meerdere virtuele machines tegelijk draaien, ook kun je gebruik maken van 3d-graphics en kun je eenvoudig bestanden en mappen delen tussen het host-besturingssysteem en de guest. Verder kun je het netwerk van de host delen, zodat je met de VM online kan. Ook heeft VMware Workstation de mogelijkheid om snapshots te nemen van virtuele machines, op die manier kun je snel terug naar een eerdere staat van de machine mocht er iets stuk gaan.
VMware is in 2023 opgegaan in Broadcom. Sindsdien is VMware Workstation Pro gratis voor persoonlijk gebruik.
Versie 17 introduceerde een aantal nieuwe functies en verbeteringen, zoals de mogelijkheid om VM’s automatisch te starten na het starten van je computer, is de encryptiesnelheid verbeterd en is er ondersteuning toegevoegd voor virtual TPM 2.0, evenals OpenGL 4.3 en WDDM 1.2.
Wat is er nieuw
Broadcom heeft versie 17.6 van VMware Workstation Pro uitgebracht. In deze versie is de vmcli toegevoegd. Daarmee kun je vanaf de commandline VMware beheren, zoals VM’s aanmaken, starten of instellingen wijzigen. Verder is er ondersteuning toegevoegd voor Windows 11 versie 23H2, Windows Server 2025, Ubuntu 24.04 en Fedora 40, voor zowel gast- als host-besturingssystemen. Ook lost deze deze versie een aantal beveiligingsproblemen op. Je vindt het volledige changelog hieronder.

CentOS 9 Stream with kernel versions later than 5.14.0-432 is not supported on Workstation Pro 17.6 as a host
Workaround: None
Inline product upgrade from versions earlier than 17.6 will not be automatic for Workstation Pro on Windows Host
Due to the migration from VMware services to Broadcom, Workstation Pro cannot automatically apply this upgrade.
Workaround: Refer to the KB368734 article for downloading and installing Workstation Pro from the Broadcom support portal.
The multi-monitor feature might not work correctly in specific topologies
In specific situations, based on different hardware and topologies, the multi-monitor feature does not work as expected. You might see issues like reverting the topology to a single screen, or not cycling through monitors.

VMware KVM crashes while running the ‘vmware-kvm –preferences’ command
VMware KVM crashes when you try to open its Preferences dialog by using the ‘vmware-kvm –preferences’ command.
This issue is resolved.
Virtual machines run unusually slowly on Windows hosts
Running virtual machines on Windows hosts as a non-administrator user might result in high host CPU usage and poor guest performance.
This issue is resolved.
Workstation installation fails on Linux hosts with a compilation error
